| School Assessment for School Improvement Program (SASIP) is an initiative taken by “Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) with the technical support of Micro-Credit Ratings International Limited (M-CRIL), India to evaluate the overall performance of low cost private schools, foundations assisted schools and some of the public sector schools of Pakistan. The program is in the pilot phase, which is taking place in Lahore and Karachi from May 2012 to April 2013. |

SASIP has three major components:
: A comprehensive evaluation of the performance of low cost schools would be conducted to identify the school’s strengths, weaknesses and potential areas of improvement. The assessment will also help provide baseline data for setting suitable standards of performance for the schools.
Based on the potential areas of improvement identified through the school assessment, a school improvement plan would be formulated in which recommendations would be made to the school management about improving the school’s performance.
Once a school improvement plan is in place and a need for financial assistance is identified, the partner schools would be linked with financial institutions or other organizations which are willing to provide financial support to the partner schools on feasible terms and conditions. |

| Yes, SASIP is the best practice of the “School Rating Project” of India which was implemented in 2009 by Micro-Credit Ratings International Limited (M-CRIL) India, pioneers of the microfinance ratings, with the help of a private foundation named Gray Matters Capital (GMC). |

SASIP is restricted to low cost schools charging students up to Rs. 1,000 per month and in some rare cases up to Rs. 3,000 per month

| Assessment will be done in 3 working days. However, if need be, additional time will be given to the founders/managers to ensure that their concerns and work is well recorded and presented.
The collected data will be analyzed in one week and a comprehensive and readable assessment report will be generated for the review of stakeholders after one month. |

The SASIP toolkit assesses the school’s performance in the following dimensions:
• – Teaching methodologies adopted by the teachers, competency level of the teachers, and infrastructure, facilities and amenities essential for providing the students with an environment in which they could learn and grow.
• – Results across different classes, specifically in board exams, as well as performance of students in the standardized tests conducted by the ITA team for Classes 1 to 10 to assess the basic level of learning in English, Urdu and Mathematics.
• – Level of satisfaction with students’ communication skills, academic progress, work load, school infrastructure, extracurricular activities and management’s and teachers’ response to parents’ queries and concerns.
• – The approach of the board and the management in terms of strategy making, resource management, and improving the quality of education.
• – Details of record keeping, accounting, tracking of fee, over dues, adequacy of systems relative to the size of the institution, as well as the school’s viability and overall financial performance. |

| Standardized tests are conducted to assess the students’ and teachers’ learning levels of English, Urdu and Mathematics. Moreover, teaching methodologies and practices are evaluated through classroom observations. |

| Students will be selected randomly from Classes 1 to 10 (depending upon the school level i.e. Primary, Middle or Secondary). |

| For the pilot phase, there will be no fee charged to the participating institutions. However, there will be a fee once the pilot phase is over. The fee will vary according to the level (primary, middle, or secondary), fee range, enrolment and sponsors of the school (e.g. low cost unaided private schools, aided or foundation assisted schools, trust schools or government schools). |
